As the need to interact with data stored in enterprise applications expands beyond the core users, adapting systems to meet this need has become an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. The result is a proliferation of manual workarounds that result in process inefficiencies, delays, and poor quality of information.
The Adobe® Intelligent Document Platform provides a secure and flexible way to extend the power and reach of enterprise applications inside and outside the firewall. The platform leverages Adobe Document Services to create Intelligent Documents and integrate them into business processes. It empowers enterprises to replace inefficient, manual, paper-based processes with streamlined, automated processes that include customers, partners, and employees.
Adobe Intelligent Document Platform Overview (273 k)
The components of the Adobe Intelligent Document Platform
The Adobe Intelligent Document Platform includes three components:
Intelligent Documents
Universal client
Document Services
Intelligent Documents
An Intelligent Document can be nearly any kind of document — a tax form, a mortgage application, or a government report — that is electronic, familiar, and easy to use. Intelligent Documents retain the best characteristics of paper documents, such as a familiar look and feel, while adding powerful business logic capabilities, such as data validations and routing instructions. These features allow for more efficient interaction with enterprise applications while still providing the ability for people to access and interact with the data when necessary.
Intelligent Documents comprise three components:
- Presentation: Provides the familiar look and feel of paper documents and forms to help accelerate user adoption of electronic processes and support compliance requirements.
- Business logic: Delivers intelligence that allows authors to manage document access rights and embed business logic — such as calculations and validations — directly into documents.
- XML transport and schema: Enables enterprises to capture data in an open-standards format and move it to people and applications based on the rules of the business.
The three components of Intelligent Documents
Because they are based on Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF), Intelligent Documents include these additional components:
- Security features: With support for electronic signatures and document control, enterprises can better protect document authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality. Security features are tied to the document, so they provide enhanced security even when the document moves outside of a controlled network.
- Archiving capability: Ideally suited for archiving purposes, Intelligent Documents can lock down content to create auditable documents of record — especially important for government agencies and highly regulated industries.
Universal client
A universal client is the freely available interface or access point between people and Intelligent Documents. Adobe® Reader® software and Web browsers are examples of universal clients.
As a universal client, Adobe Reader enables users inside and outside the firewall to interact with Intelligent Documents over any device, including desktops, laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, and kiosks.
Because Intelligent Documents contain data and business logic within them, people can open Intelligent Documents in Adobe Reader to participate in business processes even when they are offline. In addition, the Adobe Intelligent Document Platform can activate advanced features contained within Intelligent Documents to provide additional interactive capabilities — such as saving forms and data locally, adding comments, and applying digital signatures — to users of the free Adobe Reader.
Accessing Intelligent Documents with a universal client
Using universal clients, customers, partners, and employees can view and interact with Intelligent Documents anytime, anywhere, on any device.
Document Services
Easily integrate documents into your IT environment by extending the reach of native XML and PDF. Adobe Document Services are the underlying technologies that create and integrate Intelligent Documents with enterprise applications and business processes.
Adobe Document Services include two powerful components: Adobe® Acrobat® and the Adobe LiveCycle line of J2EE-based enterprise servers and design tools, which help organizations and governments manage business processes and enable more secure communications across the enterprise.
Adobe LiveCycle delivers document services to integrate manual processes into enterprise applications.
Now organizations can address business-critical
issues such as improving customer communications, increasing internal operational efficiencies, and helping them meet compliance mandates.
